On World Water Day, March 22, the Water Environment Federation (Alexandria, Va.) and International Water Association (London) announced the winners of the fourth annual World Water Monitoring Challenge™ (WWMC) Water Champion Awards. World Water Day also marked the beginning of the 2013 monitoring year, which ends Dec. 31.
The award program, which began in 2009, recognizes WWMC participants for outstanding achievements in increasing awareness of water quality issues. A subcommittee of the WWMC regional panel of judges chose WWMC Water Champions to recognize superior levels of relevance, educational efforts, support, and innovation promoting water quality through the program. The award recipients named below will receive a commemorative plaque and WWMC materials, such as water monitoring equipment, resources, or promotion materials, up to a value of $500:
- Africa’s group winner is Pedagogic In-Service Training Programme (Cameroon), and the individual winner is Dawid DeWet (South Africa).
- Asia’s group winner is NatureWize (China), and the individual winner is Arora Minakshi (India).
- Australia/Oceania’s group winner is Seqwater (Australia), and the group runner-up is Wollondilly Anglican College (Australia).
- Europe’s group winner is Animex Foods (Poland), and the group runner-up is Municipal Center for Extracurricular Activities (Bulgaria).
- North America’s group winner is the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Office of Environmental Education (United States), and the individual winner is Jackie Turner (United States).
- South America’s group winner is Club de Ciencias Bénticos (Uruguay), and the individual winner is Rogério Lafayette Pinto (Brazil).
