Department of Energy Offers Finance Programs

The energy and water sectors are linked inextricably. Recognizing this connection, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has released the guide to Federal Finance Facilities Available for Energy Efficiency Upgrades and Clean Energy Deployment. The guide provides an overview and individual descriptions of 31 federal finance facilities as well as individual contact information for each of these programs, which span half a dozen agencies. Energy efficiency upgrades to water utilities, and onsite power to improve energy assurance for critical infrastructure such as water utilities are eligible for multiple programs.

WEF’s dedicated volunteers on the Energy Task Force of the Sustainability Community of Practice and the multiple energy related groups in the Residuals and Biosolids and Municipal Design Committees have been leaders in the area of energy in the water sector. These efforts include the development of WEF’s Energy Roadmap, the Energy & Water 2013 Specialty Conference, collaboration workshops with Department of Energy (DOE) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and multiple presentations on Capitol Hill.  Because of these efforts, DOE has asked WEF to ensure that water and wastewater utilities take advantage of programs described in the new guide.
