Work continues to prepare the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve in Beckley, W.Va., for the 2013 National Scout Jamboree.

The jamboree, scheduled for July 15 to 23, will feature a conservation trail, an interactive experience enabling scouts and scout leaders to learn the latest about environmental developments and ways to preserve the world’s natural resources.

The Water Environment Federation (WEF; Alexandria, Va.) will host an exhibit, and several devoted WEF members will return to volunteer at the event. This effort is led by the WEF Public Communications and Outreach Committee’s Boy Scout Jamboree Subcommittee. Participation enables WEF members to educate more than 1000 scouts each day about the public and environmental services provided through promoting clean, safe water worldwide.

“It is an unmatched opportunity to reach a large audience of attentive youths from all over the world, many of whom are beginning to contemplate careers, in a forum that emphasizes environmental stewardship,” said WEF staff member Steve Harrison, who manages the program.

Because the event has a new location, many new volunteers are needed. No scouting experience is necessary to volunteer, only a passion for clean water. Volunteer commitments  for 1 day or several are welcome.

“You’ll get a firsthand look at what will be a significant social, economic, and natural presence in the Ohio River watershed for many years to come,” Harrison said.

Those interested in volunteering can contact Harrison at sharrison@wef.org or (703) 684-2400, ext. 7715.
