WEF Comments on Renewable Fuel Standard Program Proposal

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed a rule that would lower the total renewable fuel targets for the Renewable Fuel Standard Program: Standards for 2018 and Biomass-Based Diesel Volume for 2019.

The Water Environment Federation (WEF; Alexandria, Va.) submitted written comments to EPA requesting that instead of lowering targets, it increase volume targets for 2018.

Innovative members in the sector aim to capture energy from wastewater and convert it into fuels that help run water resource recovery facilities and reduce costs for customers. The program helps members plan for investing in these energy-recovery technologies with the knowledge that the fuel produced maintains a certain value. In the comments, WEF expressed the belief that increasing volume targets would drive growth of renewable fuel produced by the water sector and assist facilities in providing for their customers.
