A variety of energy and water experts gathered at a workshop Nov. 27 to discuss energy generation and energy efficiency technologies and practices at wastewater treatment facilities. The Water Environment Federation (WEF; Alexandria, Va.), along with the Alliance to Save Energy (Washington, D.C.) and Danfoss (Nordborg, Denmark), hosted the workshop.

During the workshop, presentations focused on federal policy and efforts to promote resource recovery and energy efficiency, technology implementation and advancements, and financing mechanisms for funding projects. Speakers included Ellen Gillinsky, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Office of Water; Holmes Hummel, U.S. Department of Energy; Elena Bailey, Ovivo Water (Montreal); John Master, Danfoss; Thad Wilson, M3 Capital Partners (Chicago); and Greg Miller, Johnson Controls (Milwaukee).

Attendees then participated in small-group discussions to identify challenges and opportunities for increasing the integration of resource-recovery and energy-efficiency technologies into the water sector. They then developed strategies and action items to address identified challenges. Workshop facilitators now are compiling recommendations identified to share with the public. These recommendations will be presented during the WEF conference Energy & Water 2013: Integrated Solutions for Advancing Technology and Management, to be held May 6 to 9 in Nashville, Tenn.

The workshop was held as a follow-up to the WEF Energy Roadmap, which was released at WEFTEC® 2012, and to discussions with Nancy Stoner, assistant administrator of the EPA Office of Water, on the need to increase coordination and support from stakeholders.
