Activated Sludge and Nutrient RemovalThe Water Environment Federation (WEF; Alexandria, Va.) offers the third edition of Activated Sludge and Nutrient Removal, Manual of Practice OM-9, the latest update to the popular reference for operation of the activated sludge process.

The extensively revised publication provides expanded content on process control with step-by-step examples for calculations, a new laboratory chapter with detailed directions for common process control tests, and an introduction to using modeling for process control. Operators are guided through selecting an appropriate solids-age, calculating wasting rates, optimizing return of activated sludge flow, managing clarifier blankets, and settling dissolved-oxygen and oxidation-reduction potential set points. It also addresses advanced concepts in nutrient removal and biological process modeling.

Practice questions are provided at the end of each chapter to help readers understand and retain information. The publication provides water sector professionals with information needed to solve performance problems and improve operations at water resource recovery facilities.
