On Sept. 29, the Water Environment Research Foundation (WERF; Alexandria, Va.), Hampton Roads Sanitation District (HRSD; Virginia Beach, Va.), and DC Water (Washington, D.C.) entered into an agreement that will provide self-sustaining funding for WERF research.
The restricted fund, known as the WERF Research Fund, will be built from revenue generated from licensing a novel process-and-control apparatus for the removal of nitrogen from wastewater. A committee of five members from the organizations will manage the fund.
WERF will administer the fund, which is intended to
- fund research identified by DC Water, HRSD, and WERF as within the mission of WERF;
- assist DC Water and HRSD in meeting their National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System requirements;
- improve the quality of biosolids produced;
- improve the overall operation of DC Water and HRSD’s respective facilities; and
- benefit the wastewater sector.
