Pirates Seize the High Seas of Water Conservation

Educational performance teaches students about the ultimate treasure: water

Pirate Captain Doorknob searches for an unknown treasure so valuable that no one could live without it. After conducting an entertaining search, he learns that the treasure is water. This story, told through the theatrical multimedia program, “The Water Pirates of Neverland: Oceans 3 ½,” educates students about water conservation.


Eileen O’Neill Becomes WEF’s New Executive Director

With more than 20 years of experience at the Water Environment Federation (WEF; Alexandria, Va.), Eileen O’Neill formally steps into the role of WEF executive director. O’Neill has been serving as interim executive director since July 2013.


From the President: WEF Represents Water Around the World

Since November, I have had the privilege of attending several conferences in North America, including events in Montreal; Raleigh, N.C.; and Acapulco, Mexico. The presence of the Water Environment Federation (WEF; Alexandria, Va.) and WEF’s perceived role, both as a partner and resource to assist with the challenges facing water quality professionals, was a common thread at each event. Ideas for collaboration resulting from discussions spoke to the similarity of all our missions to provide professional education.


Projects Win DC Water’s 2013 Green Infrastructure Challenge

Building infrastructure to handle stormwater no longer needs to focus on gray, it also can be green. To provide incentives for greening open spaces, streets, roofs, pavement, and bioretention facilities as a way to manage stormwater, DC Water (Washington, D.C.) launched the Green Infrastructure Challenge in April 2013. In January 2014, the utility announced seven projects as winners of the challenge’s first phase.


Promote Water Savings During Fix a Leak Week 2014

Every year, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency hosts the Fix a Leak Week and encourages water sector organizations to promote checking for and fixing leaks in fixtures and irrigation systems. The sixth annual promotion will be held March 17–23.
