Water Environment Federation (WEF; Alexandria, Va.) staff ventured outside the office to educate the public about and improve water quality in honor of Earth Day. Staff volunteered for the City of Alexandria’s 2013 Earth Day event and to clean up the Potomac River waterfront during the fourth annual WEF Service Project event.

On April 20, six staff members spent their Saturday at Alexandria Earth Day, which featured the theme “Water: Every Drop Counts.” WEF was one of the event sponsors.

“We consistently had a line of children and adults eager to learn about water quality,” said Jessica Rozek, WEF materials development manager. Approximately 1000 residents visited the WEF booth to learn about the effects of pollution, facts on water use, and conservation tips. Visitors were able to take their photo with Niles, the WEFCOM crocodile, pledge to take shorter showers, and receive WATER’S WORTH IT giveaways.

On May 3, 25 WEF staff participated in the Spring for Alexandria Community Service Day event organized by Volunteer Alexandria in partnership with the City of Alexandria. For the event, staff picked up trash along the Potomac River waterfront and improved a waterfront park by painting and maintaining a garden in the park.

The leaders of WEF Eco led this effort. WEF Eco organizes a staffwide service project each year to exemplify WEF’s commitment to preserving and enhancing the water environment. The internal group is run by a team of 14 staff members. It coordinates actions, activities, and events that educate staff on sustainable practices and bring WEF staff into the local community to help reduce the environmental effects of WEF’s business practices and operations.

In addition to the service event, WEF Eco raised money to donate to Spring for Alexandria through an Earth Day ice cream social where WEF board members were invited to mingle with staff and contribute to the event. The group plans to host four other educational events for staff throughout the year.
