On June 20, the Water Environment Federation (WEF; Alexandria, Va.) co-signed a letter supporting the Water for the World Act of 2012 (H.R. 3658) sponsored by U.S. Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D–Ore.).

WEF Executive Director Jeff Eger and chief executive officers from more than 30 nonprofit organizations supporting clean water for underserved populations around the world signed the letter.

If enacted, the bill would increase the importance of water within the United States’ foreign assistance programs. The bill emphasizes the need for more investments by the U.S. State Department and U.S. Agency for International Development in countries with drinking water and sanitation problems. The legislation would make water issues a higher priority when determining how U.S. foreign assistance is awarded.
