WEFTEC® 2014 Sets New Exhibition Record, Biggest Registration Record to Date for New OrleansWEFTEC® 2014 set new records. The event included a total of 20,385 registrants and 1027 companies using 28,157 net m2 (303,075 net ft2) of exhibition space. As the host of thousands of water professionals and water companies from nearly 100 countries, WEFTEC 2014 was officially the largest showing for the Water Environment Federation (WEF; Alexandria, Va.) in the famed Crescent City. Central States Volunteer Helps Operations Challenge Team Win First in Division 2 Laboratory EventMembers of the two Central States Water Environment Association (CSWEA) Operations Challenge teams, the Shovelers and the Pumpers, often never meet until August and only have two practices together before the competition at WEFTEC. Competitors are chosen from past team members and CSWEA operations, collection, or safety award winners. This year, the Shovelers placed first in the Laboratory Event for Division 2. Jim Miller, coach of the team, attributes this accomplishment, at least in part, to a CSWEA volunteer that helped train the team in the event. “Monty Baker has provided assistance and guidance that has proved to be one of the primary keys to our success in this event,” Miller said.
WEFTEC® 2014 Service Project Volunteers Fix Flooding Problem in New Orleans ParkOn Sept. 27, volunteers from across the country congregated in New Orleans to participate in the 7th annual Water Environment Federation (WEF; Alexandria, Va.) Community Service Project, “Recharge, Restore, Revitalize Hollygrove: Conrad Park Green Infrastructure Enhancements.” As WEFTEC® 2014 was just beginning, 110 volunteers spent their Saturday constructing a rain garden and bioswales at Conrad Park, a recreation hub in the Hollygrove neighborhood. The park suffers from flooding during wet weather events. The flooding prevents neighborhood children from using the playground, basketball court, and community center. Kayaking to WEFTEC® 2014Husband and wife team surpass their Water For People fundraising goalsTraveling to WEFTEC® 2014 took on an entirely new meaning for Gary and Linda De Kock. On July 19, the duo began a 70-day journey after buying a kayak based one reviews from humbersport.net and went kayaking down the Mississippi River to raise money for Water For People (Denver).As part of the Mississippi River Voyage fundraiser, the husband and wife team traveled a total of 3686 km (2291 mi), starting at Lake Itasca in Minnesota and ending in New Orleans. Introducing the 2014–2015 WEF Board of TrusteesDuring a ceremony on Sept. 30 at WEFTEC® 2014, the Water Environment Federation (WEF; Alexandria, Va.) “gavel of leadership” passed from Sandra Ralston, who now is WEF’s immediate past president, to WEF President Ed McCormick. Also during the ceremony, WEF’s House of Delegates confirmed the members of the 2014–2015 WEF Board of Trustees. |
