Water professionals who want to learn more about wastewater treatment fundamentals have multiple opportunities to learn online.
The Water Environment Federation (WEF; Alexandria, Va.) released the Wastewater Treatment Fundamentals I: Liquid Treatment manual packaged with an online course and exam to help professionals prepare for certification exams and earn continuing education units (CEUs).
Now, those who want to focus on specific topic areas covered in the manual can purchase short courses. The following courses can be purchased separately from each other and the manual:
- Preliminary and Primary Treatment Fundamentals introduces wastewater treatment concepts and covers the first stages of wastewater treatment.
- Biological Treatment Fundamentals introduces biological treatment concepts and provides information on wastewater treatment ponds and fixed-film treatment.
- Activated Sludge Fundamentals provides background on activated sludge systems.
- Disinfection Fundamentals outlines the various processes for disinfecting wastewater.
- Nutrient Removal Fundamentals educates on ways to remove nitrogen and phosphorus from flows.
Each course provides simulated exam questions, practice tests, immediate feedback on all answers, and in-depth explanatory videos of key topics and processes. Those who take the courses are eligible for 0.85–1.7 CEUs or 8.5–17 contact hours. Costs for the courses range from $48 to $120 with discounted rates for WEF members.
