Anaerobic Digestion Fundamentals Fact Sheet

Click to access the “Anaerobic Digestion Fundamentals” fact sheet.

Key information about anaerobic digestion now is available in a new 6-page, open-access fact sheet prepared by the Fundamental Outreach Subcommittee of the Water Environment Federation (WEF; Alexandria, Va.) Municipal Resource Recovery Design Committee.

Anaerobic Digestion Fundamentals” provides an overview of anaerobic digestion; covers the topics of process, design, and operation and maintenance; and describes additional WEF resources that cover anaerobic digestion in more detail.

Anaerobic digestion aids in the sustainability of water resource recovery facilities. In addition to contributing to the stabilization of solids and the reduction of volatile solids, anaerobic digestion generates biogas that can be used to produce heat and power. This potential for resource recovery has led to its increased use in recent decades.

Find this and other municipal design resources on WEF’s Wastewater Treatment Technical Resources webpage.
