The Water Environment Federation (WEF; Alexandria, Va.) and Northeast Midwest Institute co-sponsored a congressional briefing by scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey National Water Quality Assessment program. During the July 19 briefing, scientists presented findings from a recently completed national data collection and analysis of the ecological health of the nation’s streams. The ecological health study found a variety of human-created factors that are impairing the health of streams.

The briefing, hosted by U.S. Sen. Benjamin Cardin (D–Md.) and U.S. Reps. Jim Moran (D–Va.) and Donna Edwards (D–Md.), was attended by approximately 75 congressional and federal agency staff members.
