WEF Submits Comments on Dental Amalgam Effluent Guidelines Rule

The Water Environment Federation (WEF; Alexandria, Va.), as well as many other organizations, submitted comments to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regarding the potential impact of proposed dental-amalgam effluent requirements. The proposal would require dental offices to comply with rules for controlling the discharge of dental amalgam pollutants into publicly owned treatment works (POTWs) based on the best available technology or best available control technology and best management practices.

WEF comments addressed topics such as a phase-out process and implementation issues with POTWs without an approved pretreatment program as well as other implementation issues. WEF will continue to work with EPA on addressing these issues as it works toward a final rule.
