Enlisting earthworms to treat biosolids
Jerry Scholder is on a mission to gain government acceptance for using worms to treat biosolids.
“I’m in the business of research to certify Class A biosolids through a nonthermophilic approach,” Scholder said. “That’s my key objective and key mission.”
An Idaho wastewater utility installs artwork of microorganisms near its WRRF
Few think of a water resource recovery facility (WRRF) as a likely venue to showcase local art, but that is exactly what the City of Coeur D’Alene (Idaho) Wastewater Utility Department building is doing. Since summer 2012, the facility has featured several art pieces, including seven 3.7-m-tall (12-ft-tall), 136- to 181-kg (300- to 400-lb) steel sculptures meant to represent the many “bugs” that aid the treatment process.
 March 22 marks World Water Day 2013, the International Year of Water Cooperation. Celebrated on this date every year since 1993, World Water Day focuses attention on the importance of fresh water and advocating sustainable management of water resources, according to the United Nations (U.N.; New York) World Water Day press kit.
Thomas DeLaura, vice president of Eramosa International Inc. (Detroit) and a Water Environment Federation (WEF; Alexandria, Va.) member since 1982, was named International Society of Automation (ISA; Research Triangle Park, N.C.) Water and Wastewater Industry Division 2012 Member of the Year.
