Ancient Iranian Civilization Owes Its Existence to Remarkable Water Management System

If you and your pals were planning to start a new civilization, you would probably think twice about settling in the middle of a desert that receives less than 127 mm (5 in.) of rainfall a year.

But such practical concerns didn’t faze the Persians entering the desert in Iran more than 3000 years ago. The fledgling civilization turned to qanats for their water.


Water Careers Go Back Four Generations in Chesebrough Family

Patty Chesebrough learned the importance of water stewardship as she watched her late father, Don Chesebrough, inspect boats equipped with sinks and toilets to ensure they would not discharge their waste into the lake. Don had been taught similar lessons decades earlier from his father.

Like her father and grandfather, Patty uses the power of education to promote water stewardship. When her son, Anthony Passariello, was born, she began teaching him too.


Membership Helps 2017 WEF Fellow Become a Successful Leader

Rajendra Bhattarai, a water leader with nearly four decades of experience in the public sector, joined the esteemed ranks of Water Environment Federation (WEF; Alexandria, Va.) Fellows in 2017. This distinction recognizes Bhattarai’s devotion to the water profession as a WEF member, a commitment that stems from his roots on the other side of the globe.


In Memoriam – Roy Herwig, “Father of CMOM”

Roy Arthur Herwig, known as the father of capacity, management, operation, and maintenance (CMOM), died Dec. 17, 2017, at the age of 75.  

Herwig worked for Region 4 of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from 1984 to 2001. During his tenure at EPA, he helped develop the CMOM program to help evaluate the performance of collection systems.
